Wishful Wednesday #13

wow... 13, lucky number :D

Battle Royale by Koushun Takami

Koushun Takami's notorious high-octane thriller envisions a nightmare scenario: a class of junior high school students is taken to a deserted island where, as part of a ruthless authoritarian program, they are provided arms and forced to kill until only one survivor is left standing. Criticized as violent exploitation when 1st published in Japan—where it became a runaway best seller—Battle Royale is a Lord of the Flies for the 21st century, a potent allegory of what it means to be young and (barely) alive in a dog-eat-dog world.

tertarik karena covernya ala komik Jepang gitu, tadinya agak2 ngeri baca waktu baca sampul belakangnya, tapi waktu baca "Battle Royale is a Lord of the Flies for the 21st century" - I guess I should read this one... karena Lord of the Flies adalah salah satu buku yang direkomendasikan oleh Astrid, jadi sekalian juga deh pengen buku ini... :D

Lord of the Flies by William Golding

William Golding's compelling story about a group of very ordinary small boys marooned on a coral island has become a modern classic. At 1st, it seems as though it's all going to be great fun; but the fun before long becomes furious & life on the island turns into a nightmare of panic & death. As ordinary standards of behavior collapse, the whole world the boys know collapses with them—the world of cricket & homework & adventure stories—& another world is revealed beneath, primitive & terrible.

The Deep End of the Sea by Heather Lyons

The Deep End of the Sea
by Heather Lyons

ebook, 288 pages
Published February 13th 2014 by Cerulean Books

The Greek mythology has fascinated me from a long time a go, though I'm not really study it seriously, but stories about the God and Goddess will always captivate me...

I remembered how the TV serial of Xena and Hercules to be my must saw TV programs when I was younger.

And a few months a go when I stumbled upon this book, I know that I have to read it...
The thing is not many online book store sell this book, I only found it on Amazon.com and ebay.com by a store from Australia, however fortunately when I checked Kobo.com, they have it... #yay!

It's about a young girl named Medusa, who has been punished by Athena (the Goddess of Wisdom) for something she was not at her fault, as she has been accused for disgracing her temple by seducing Poseidon (the God of the Sea).

Medusa is cursed to become a monster with snake as her hair and ability to change animal or human being by her eyes and exiled to a far away island. Though, being exiled, she has best friends, a man and a God, Hermes, the God of transitions and boundaries.

After 2000 years, finally, Hermes, her best friend can actually talked to Medusa and brings her to the Olympus for justice.

I really love the story, the story with different angle of what we used to know, the ancient Greek with setting of modern world. That actually, the mythology has survived until now with some adjustment that might make sense...

Along the way, I always intrigued to check for the God or Goddess over wikipedia.com, but I can restrained my self and just enjoy the story... ;-)

If you love Greek mythology, then you should read this book... if you don't then maybe you should try to read it as well, and see if you'll like it then...

From my self, I gave it 5 out of 5 stars for this story... ;-)

Wishful Wednesday #12

it's maybe like a dejavu... but just remember that... we wish upon a star and we wish for a coming true wish… :D

today… I'm wishing a new book, advertised by an online bookstore, Book Depository… the story is kind of creepy, but looks promising… ;-)

The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton

On a brisk autumn day in 1686, eighteen-year-old Nella Oortman arrives in Amsterdam to begin a new life as the wife of illustrious merchant trader Johannes Brandt. But her new home, while splendorous, is not welcoming. Johannes is kind yet distant, always locked in his study or at his warehouse office-leaving Nella alone with his sister, the sharp-tongued and forbidding Marin.

But Nella's world changes when Johannes presents her with an extraordinary wedding gift: a cabinet-sized replica of their home. To furnish her gift, Nella engages the services of a miniaturist-an elusive and enigmatic artist whose tiny creations mirror their real-life counterparts in eerie and unexpected ways . . .

Johannes' gift helps Nella to pierce the closed world of the Brandt household. But as she uncovers its unusual secrets, she begins to understand-and fear-the escalating dangers that await them all. In this repressively pious society where gold is worshipped second only to God, to be different is a threat to the moral fabric of society, and not even a man as rich as Johannes is safe. Only one person seems to see the fate that awaits them. Is the miniaturist the key to their salvation . . . or the architect of their destruction?

Enchanting, beautiful, and exquisitely suspenseful, The Miniaturist is a magnificent story of love and obsession, betrayal and retribution, appearance and truth.

[BOOK TOUR] Tamed (Tangled #3) by Emma Chase

Tamed (Tangled #3)
by Emma Chase

ARC, ebook, 256 pages
Published July 15th 2014 by Gallery Books

~* TEASER *~

She puts on the helmet, but doesn’t climb on the Ducati right away. She stands on the sidewalk, hands on her hips, looking thoughtfully at it. “What would you say if I said I wanted to drive your motorcycle to the party?”
“I’d say you’re shit out of luck. I don’t ride bitch.”
She knocks me upside the head—but my helmet softens the blow. “Then let me take it for a ride myself. Just around the block.”
“I . . .don’t think so.”
She pouts.
I sigh. “Have you ever driven a motorcycle before?”
“No, but I’ve always wanted to.”
“Well, I’ve always wanted to fly, but that doesn’t mean I’m gonna strap on a squirrel suit and skydive from the god damn Empire State Building.”
She steps closer, and rubs her placating hands up my chest. “Come on, please? I’ll be really careful and grateful. Really grateful. Like . . .deviantly, let you handcuff me to the bed, kind of grateful.”
Forget the national broadcast system—this is the test. Am I going to stick to my man-guns, keep my pride, and protect my cherished vehicle from almost certain carnage? Or, am I going to be ruled by my dick and swayed by the promise of kinky, have-Dee-at-my-mercy-all-night-long, sex?
No contest.
“Riding bitch, it is.”

~* REVIEW *~

Because the greatest part of a road trip isn't arriving at your destination. It's all the wild stuff that happens along the way.

We have meet Matthew Fisher and Dee-Dee Warren in Tangled and Holy Frigging Matrimony, even the latest one is about their wedding from Drew and Kate's side of story… ;-)

And now we'll get to know even better of Matthew and Dee-Dee, from Matthew pov. From the first day they met, until finally getting married.

Though Matthew and Drew are best friends, they really not share commons thought about women and how they handle them… If Drew a little bit childish spoiled, Matthew is more serious and has many rules if it comes to a relationship…
but I guess Matthew always knew himself so well…

Maybe the story is just ordinary love story, about how to winning a girl heart, what different is the male pov is still uncommon… and it's exhilarating… and always fun…

Also the good thing is Matthew has different personality than Drew, so we don't get bored of them… Matthew seems more matured, patient enough to get what he wants, and especially he's not forcing his way to Dee… He is respectful…

On the other side, Dee… she seems like having a split personalities… in Drew & Kate's story, she seems so tough, hard willing and very dangerous… she defended Kate so eagerly… and at first I cannot imagine what kind of personality she has… and turns out that she's fun and a little bit has problem with insecurity… the feeling of insecurity makes her funerable and also protecting herself too much… even for her own happiness…

So… it's a nice story and I like it so much, I gave it 4 out of 5 stars… and I look forward the final touch [I guess] of Drew & Kate's story in Tied :3

Raging Star (Dust Lands Trilogy #3) by Moira Young

Raging Star (Dust Lands Trilogy #3)
by Moira Young

Paperback, 344 pages
Published May 1st 2014 by Marion Lloyd Books

I go deep inside my self. Shrinking my self down to one point of light. Where I'm safe. Where I'm strong.
I'm one point of light an I ask,
Who am I?
What do I believe?
Never lose sight of what I believe in. Never, no matter what happens.
What one person does affects all of us.
We're all bound together. We're all threads in a single garment of destiny.
I make my destiny myself.
By the choices I make.

Sorry, I will not tell the story of this book in this review… since I kinda off to writing review lately… I think maybe my brain stuck with politic news lately, therefore I couldn't think properly… so I will just write what I can and what I like for a time being… [kaya' yang sebelum2nya gak aja… (--') ]

I don't know why it takes so long to finish the book, but I guess it is because the story was dragging at first… Saba was so uncertain… full of guilt of hiding things behind her friends, guilty of people who died, secret of Jack and secret of DeMalo behind Jack, her using of Tommo and Tommo's feeling to her… she's very depressed and had really had big burden on her shoulder…

However, at the end, everything was so very well done… Though, things were not go smoothly with Jack… but… at the end, it's very almost happy ending… :D

I love Saba's character, she's so strong… and though she's in doubt she really is true to her self… and I love about there are two men here, which are both irresistible… DeMalo and Jack…

DeMalo who is charming and wicked… and Jack who is sweet and strong will… I know actually Saba is falling for both of them… but our heroine should be with the kind one, right?

DeMalo has a dream, big dream… though he chose the wrong path to make it true… and he did every thing to make his dream comes true, even by killing his son…
Sadly, in this third book, DeMalo is kinda off to Saba, not as he was previously… maybe because he didn't forgive Saba for what she had done to him… and maybe that's why he seemed distance now…

I'm glad that the ending is good, and I gave it 5 out of 5 stars for this book… :3

Hope, that soon, I'll find great books like these again... =D

Wishful Wednesday #10

yay! today is the July 9, it's time for us to choose our dream future President, and I hope the best will win... :D

this week I wanna wish for the sequel book of The Cuckoo's Calling, the Wormsilk… though I guess the marketing is not as excited as the Kukuk's… maybe that's why JK Rowling finally admitted who's Robert Galbraith is after all…

however, I love The Cuckoo's Calling, that why I wish for the Wormsilk… ;-)

The Silkworm (Cormoran Strike #2) by Robert Galbraith

Private investigator Cormoran Strike returns in a new mystery from Robert Galbraith, author of the #1 international bestseller The Cuckoo's Calling. When novelist Owen Quine goes missing, his wife calls in private detective Cormoran Strike. At first, Mrs. Quine just thinks her husband has gone off by himself for a few days--as he has done before--and she wants Strike to find him and bring him home. But as Strike investigates, it becomes clear that there is more to Quine's disappearance than his wife realizes. The novelist has just completed a manuscript featuring poisonous pen-portraits of almost everyone he knows. If the novel were to be published, it would ruin lives--meaning that there are a lot of people who might want him silenced. When Quine is found brutally murdered under bizarre circumstances, it becomes a race against time to understand the motivation of a ruthless killer, a killer unlike any Strike has encountered before... A compulsively readable crime novel with twists at every turn, THE SILKWORM is the second in the highly acclaimed series featuring Cormoran Strike and his determined young assistant, Robin Ellacott.

The Possibility of Us by Lisa Burstein

The Possibility of Us
by Lisa Burstein

ARC, ebook, 180 pages
Published July 1st 2014 by Entangled: Embrace

When Ben Claire and Cassie Wick meet again, in unusual circumstance... Cassie finally understand what's her truly feeling and what sacrifice that she's willing to give to get what she really wants.

The story just about 3 days of Cassie and Ben's life... but somehow... the feeling is so deep...

We'll really can feel of what Cassie and Ben's felt for each other... though the details is not really came out or rather I think the reason behind their separation in the first place is exaggerated by themselves.

I really enjoy the narration, the story is short and focus, though I guess it's kind of missing more elaboration of the characters' background, but maybe the story will be told in the prequel book "Dear Cassie".

I love the story and I gave it 4 out of 5 stars for it.

Wishful Wednesday [9]

I have told you all that I am fascinated by story during WW II, right?

So... here one more, that I found out in the circular email from the online bookstore, Open Trolley... :D
First, the cover is so cute... then the story looks interesting... so my Wishful Wednesday this week would be...

Love by the Morning Star by Laura L. Sullivan

Upstairs, downstairs, and in which lady’s chamber?

On the brink of World War II, two girls are sent to  the grand English country estate of Starkers. Hannah, the half-Jewish daughter of a disgraced distant relative, has been living an artistic bohemian life in a cabaret in pre-war Germany and now is supposed to be welcomed into the family. Anna, the social-climbing daughter of working-class British fascists, is supposed to be hired as a maid so that she can spy for the Nazis. But there’s a mix-up, and nice Hannah is sent to the kitchen as a maid while arrogant Anna is welcomed as a relative.

And then both girls fall for the same man, the handsome heir of the estate . . . or do they?

In this sparkling, saucy romance, nearly everything goes wrong for two girls who are sent to a grand English estate on the brink of World War II—until it goes so very, very right!
